The termination process – You only have one chance.

The termination process – You only have one chance.

You only have once chance to make sure that when the employee leaves your employment there pay is correct. Once an employee has left the company it is extremely difficult to recoup any monies or other items (security equipment, tools cell phones)  in their possession. I have no doubt that you know that sinking feeling as you realize that the loan balance has not been cleared or the uniform is still in their possession and their forwarding phone number remains unanswered

I know you can phone, I know you can send a letter, I know you can ask a fellow employee … but this sure is a frustration and a real waste of time and energy .

I also know that that if the employee for any reason makes life difficult our normal reaction is to give up. To walk away from the money owed as the legal route is often not worth the effort. In most case this entails a claim in the civil courts normally preceded by lawyer’s letters, letters of demand and finally a summons.

So the solution is simple get it right the first time.

I have compiled a basic checklist to start you on the way. I think it would be good to complete one of these and keep them on file for future reference, not only to make sure that you have recovered everything but also to make sure that the employee who is leaving understands what you are deducting and who you are communicating with on their behalf. Please add what I have missed (if you think it is really important then e –mail me please)  and change it to suite your needs. Add your logo put it into your procedure manual.

It would be great if they could take a copy with them so that there was no misunderstanding once they have left your employment.
